Elective Description
This course may be completed at urban, suburban, and rural sites throughout New York State with approved voluntary faculty. A number are within commuting distance of Syracuse and include managed care settings, community health centers, and private practices. Preceptorships in other states may be arranged, but require significant advance plannning. Students will understand the role of family physicians; will develop skills in the diagnosis and management of common medical problems; and will understand the nature of consultation with other medical specialists. Students progress from observation to initial patient contact with preceptor review. Rate of progression and participation, assignment of short literature reviews of patient problems, and night call are at the discretion of the individual preceptors.
